Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Ethiopia Vacancies


The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is inviting qualified Ethiopian nationals to apply for several protection-focused positions within their operations in the Tigray region. DRC is committed to providing compassionate, trauma-informed psychosocial support and other vital protection services to individuals, families, and groups facing challenging life circumstances.

Start Date for all positions: August 01, 2025

Contract Length for all positions: Five Months (National Contract)

Salary and conditions: In accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for National employees.


1. Protection Officer – PSS

  • Designation of Duty Station: Shire, Tigray, Ethiopia
  • Band: H2 – Non-Management
  • Main Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments.
    • Develop individualized care plans with clients.
    • Provide individual or group-based counseling, emotional support, and crisis intervention based on DRC PSS SoPs.
    • Collaborate with other protection teams (case management, legal officers) for comprehensive care.
    • Assist clients in navigating and accessing community resources (mental health services, financial assistance, housing, social services).
    • Prepare/adopt IEC materials.
    • Plan and lead overall peer mentorship and socio-emotional learning programs.
    • Advocate for clients’ needs and rights.
    • Maintain detailed and confidential client records.
    • Participate in ongoing training and professional development.
    • Supervise and coach protection assistants – PSS.
    • Carry out other tasks directed by the supervisor.
  • Experience and Technical Competencies:
    • 2 years of work experience in a related field.
    • Experience in providing psychosocial support-related activities in humanitarian organizations.
    • Previous experience working with IDPs and returnees is preferable.
    • Full proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); proficiency in Activity info and other data collection/analysis tools is desirable.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or other related fields from a recognized institution.
  • Language: Proficient in English; knowledge of local language is an advantage.
  • Required Skill: Project management.

2. Protection Officer – Emergency Response

  • Designation of Duty Station: Sheraro, Tigray, Ethiopia
  • Band: H2 – Non-Management
  • Main Duties and Responsibilities (Technical):
    • Carry out protection monitoring assessments and share reports.
    • Support protection assistants to deliver Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE).
    • Contribute to targeting, beneficiary selection, and distribution of multi-purpose cash and dignity kits.
    • Lead the implementation of HLP (Housing, Land, and Property) information dissemination, training, and victim assistance.
    • Ensure timely and adequate referrals for individuals in need of protection services.
    • Ensure adherence to ethical data collection and data protection protocols.
    • Carry out activities according to the work plan and budget, in line with protection standards.
    • Follow all protection guidelines and SOPs, providing feedback on additional needs.
    • Carry out additional protection activities as assigned.
  • Main Duties and Responsibilities (Reporting and Administrative):
    • Support provision of regular project updates (weekly reports, challenges).
    • Prepare and submit weekly progress reports.
    • Ensure proper documentation and reporting of project activities.
  • Experience and Technical Competencies:
    • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an entry to mid-level position in humanitarian protection or a relevant social service field.
    • Experience in the Tigray region is strongly preferred.
    • Experience in direct implementation of Community-Based Protection activities.
    • Proven record of community engagement and consultation.
    • Technical understanding of core protection concepts and strategies.
    • Experience in identifying and responding to the needs of vulnerable individuals based on protection risks, age, gender, and diversity analysis.
    • Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Integrity, strong work ethic, and ability to consistently meet deadlines under pressure.
    • Commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies.
    • Full proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); proficiency in Kobo and other data collection/analysis tools is desirable.
  • Education: University degree in social work, social science, law, or other relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Language: Excellent skills in speaking, reading, and writing English and Tigrigna.

3. Protection Assistant – Emergency Response

  • Designation of Duty Station: Sheraro, Tigray, Ethiopia
  • Band: I1 – Non-Management
  • Main Duties and Responsibilities (Technical):
    • Collect protection risks and needs through monitoring assessment tools.
    • Deliver Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) through group sessions and IEC/BCC materials.
    • Lead targeting, beneficiary selection, and distribution of multi-purpose cash and dignity kits.
    • Lead the implementation of HLP information dissemination, training for local actors, and provision of victim assistance.

4. Protection Assistant – PSS

  • Designation of Duty Station: Sheraro, Tigray, Ethiopia
  • Band: I2 – Non-Management
  • Responsibilities:
    • Provide individual psychosocial support to DRC people of concern.
    • Support the designing and delivery of psychoeducational awareness sessions.
    • Support the country emergency team in emergency response efforts, providing PSS to the community.
    • Collaborate with other service providers and make appropriate referrals/follow-up.
    • Foster community participation and engagement in psychosocial support activities.
    • Identify and support local resources (community-based organizations, volunteers) to enhance PSS availability.
    • Participate in capacity-building sessions.
    • Contribute to developing and updating a service mapping system.
    • Work closely with legal aid staff, community workers, and volunteers in Addis Ababa (note: duty station is Sheraro, Tigray, but this point mentions Addis Ababa; clarification may be needed).
    • Any other duties assigned by the Protection Specialist.
  • Experience and Technical Competencies:
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Knowledge of community resources and social service programs related to mental health, protection, etc.
    • Proficiency in basic computer skills and data entry.
    • Previous experience in mental health, protection, or community-based settings is an asset.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certificate in human services or related field is preferred.
  • Language: Proficient in English; knowledge of local language is an advantage.

5. Protection Team Leader – Emergency Response

  • Designation of Duty Station: Sheraro, Tigray, Ethiopia
  • Band: G2 – Management
  • Main Duties and Responsibilities (Technical Management):
    • Provide technical guidance for quality and adherence to protection standards.
    • Technically guide implementation of monthly protection reports, info hubs, and support peace committees.
    • Lead or contribute to protection/multi-sectoral assessments.
    • Ensure a strong service mapping is developed and updated.
    • Provide regular technical support and material to the protection team for HLP, Dignity kits, PSS, EORE, General Protection, and MPCA activities.
    • Develop and deliver protection training to staff, partners, and stakeholders.
    • Lead protection monitoring, area-level need, and conflict sensitivity assessments.
    • Support protection program development (project design, proposals).
    • Oversee mainstreaming of gender-sensitive and inclusive approaches.
    • Ensure quality monitoring and evaluation of protection activities.
    • Maintain accurate and comprehensive files of protection activities.
  • Main Duties and Responsibilities (Staff Management):
    • Manage and technically supervise Protection Officers and Assistants, community volunteers, providing leadership, support, guidance, and capacity building.
    • Promote team building and a positive working environment.
    • Plan and oversee protection and HMA work and activity plans.
    • Ensure implementation of protection activities according to program commitments.
    • Facilitate/provide refresher training on DRC’s code of conduct, accountability, and PSEA.
    • Attend and contribute to relevant coordination mechanisms.
  • Main Duties and Responsibilities (Project Management):
    • Work closely with Protection Manager and HMA operation manager and CO emergency coordinator for activity planning and quality assurance.
    • Maintain detailed tracking of protection and EORE activities.
    • Ensure high-standard and prompt reports.
    • Develop and maintain working relationships with key stakeholders and represent DRC in coordination meetings.
    • Perform any other duties assigned by the Protection Manager.
  • Experience and Technical Competencies:
    • 3 years of experience working with displaced populations and familiarity with displacement dynamics, humanitarian response related to forced displacement.
    • Minimum of 3 years of management or technical protection experience working for an international NGO, UN agency, or relevant ministry/authority.
    • Experience working as a protection team leader, protection monitoring/GBV case management/legal aid, and MHPSS.
    • Experience in Tigray, emergency program management in Tigray.
    • Excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies.
  • Education: Advanced degree in International Law, Development Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, or any Social Sciences or relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Language: Excellent English skills (spoken and written) required. Knowledge of Amharic, English, and Tigrigna is mandatory.
