LWF World Service in Ethiopia:

LWF World Service Ethiopia, a registered foreign charity, has been operating in Ethiopia since 1973.4 We implement various development and humanitarian projects across the country, collaborating closely with the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY), the Ethiopian Government, UN organizations, and other funding partners.5 Our focus areas include food security, sustainable livelihoods, natural resource management, emergency preparedness and response, and capacity building.6 Guided by a commitment to human rights, our work is people-centered, community-based, and prioritizes the most vulnerable.7

Climate Change Mitigation & Adaptation Officer

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, implementation, and monitoring of climate change and resilience-building interventions through nature-based solutions.
  • Support implementing partners in the execution of nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation activities.
  • Facilitate landscape assessment, baseline study, and stakeholder mapping in climate change and resilience building, with a nature-based solution lens.9
  • Identify/design IEC/BCC materials and facilitate their use with communities and stakeholders for awareness-raising and mobilization activities on climate change issues.
  • Support local partners (CBOs) to engage men, women, and children in promoting climate change and climate justice.
  • Initiate and work with networks on climate change and resilience building issues.
  • Facilitate capacity-building initiatives to improve understanding among target communities and local actors on climate change and disaster risk reduction for collective positive actions.10
  • Work closely with local government bodies, CBOs, NGOs, and other stakeholders for the common goal of resilience building.11
  • Plan following an action cycle of completing inventories, establishing emission reduction targets, formulating plans, implementing abatement actions, and measuring success.12
  • Develop grant and funding applications for carbon finance schemes, managing and implementing consistent with project emissions reductions and adaptation plans.
  • Develop adaptation policy and plans on climate issues; respond to emerging climate change risks across project areas; assist communities in establishing and implementing Greenhouse Emissions Reductions and Climate Change Adaptation programs.
  • Promote relevant community climate change programs and events in consultation with stakeholders, undertaking reviews of existing action plans and strategies.13
  • Collect, analyze, document, and share learning and best practices in climate change, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and resilience building.14
  • Prepare quarterly, semi-annual, and annual performance reports.15 Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports/updates when necessary.
  • Follow procedures as outlined in LWF’s policies, staff rules, and other operation manuals and guidelines.16
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the project coordinator/team leader or their designate.17

Job Requirements:

  • Education: Minimum of Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in rural development, climate change, natural resource management, environmental protection, and/or related studies.18
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience for Bachelor’s Degree holders.19
    • Minimum of 1 year of related work experience for Master’s Degree holders.
  • Key Competencies:
    • Strong communication skills in English (written and oral).20
    • Knowledge of the local language is mandatory.
