As climate change increasingly impacts vulnerable communities, HI Ethiopia is expanding its resilience and inclusive development initiatives by strategic positioning in climate finance, carbon markets, and nature-based solutions.

Internship Position & Details

Climate Finance and Carbon Markets Research Intern

  • Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  • Employment Type: Internship
  • Contract Duration: 1–2 months
  • Compensation/Stipend: Daily rate of ETB 1,000 (subject to applicable government taxes)
  • Supervision: Reports to the Business Development Specialist in close collaboration with programme teams.

Key Responsibilities and Objectives

The intern will undertake targeted research to generate evidence and actionable insights to inform HI Ethiopia’s resource mobilization, project development, and strategic partnerships:

  • Climate Finance Analysis:
    • Conduct desk reviews of international and Ethiopian climate finance mechanisms, funds, and facilities.
    • Identify funding opportunities relevant to climate adaptation, resilience, environmental restoration, and inclusive development.
    • Analyze donor priorities and emerging trends in climate finance.
  • Carbon Markets & Carbon Credit Research:
    • Assess developments in voluntary and compliance carbon markets in Ethiopia.
    • Explore specific opportunities including improved rangeland and natural resource management, carbon sequestration, fuel-efficient cooking solutions, and community-led restoration.
  • Policy, Stakeholder, and Donor Mapping:
    • Review national policies and legal frameworks governing climate finance and carbon markets in Ethiopia.
    • Map key stakeholders (government entities, carbon project developers, verification bodies, research institutes) and donors.
  • Knowledge Management and Deliverables:
    • Prepare concise briefing notes, stakeholder/donor databases, and research summaries.
    • Contribute research inputs to proposal development and fundraising.
    • Draft a final summary report outlining strategic opportunities, risk assessments, and recommendations for HI.

Candidate Qualifications and Requirements

  • Educational Background:
    • Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university.
    • Graduated within the last two (2) years (recent graduates / entry level).
    • Preferred Fields of Study: Environmental Economics, Agricultural Economics, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies/Science, Development Studies, Economics, Sociology, or related fields.
  • Experience, Skills, and Competencies:
    • Demonstrated interest in climate finance, sustainability, or environmental management.
    • Strong academic or professional research, analytical, and report-writing skills.
    • Basic understanding of climate change adaptation, mitigation concepts, and carbon financing mechanisms.
    • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
    • High proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and web-based research tools.
