Haramaya University – Project Vacancy Announcement

Haramaya University invites qualified and competent applicants to apply for the following vacant post under the Hararghe Health Research (HHR) project, a collaborative effort between Haramaya University and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) to advance maternal and child health care.

1. Accountant

Location: Harar, Oromia, Ethiopia
Employment Type: Full Time
No. of Posts: 1
Duration of Contract: 1 year with possible extension
Salary: 29,055 ETB per month

Job Description:

The Accountant will support project finance management, including tasks such as budgeting, payments, reconciliation, reporting, and ensuring compliance with funder regulations. The role involves working closely with project partners, including LSHTM, and Haramaya University’s finance and accounting department to maintain accurate financial records and reports.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work on project budgets to align with rules and requirements.
  • Monitor financial performance overall and project by project.
  • Report on monthly, quarterly, annual, and project endline financial performances.
  • Advise teams and project leaders on financial matters.
  • Ensure expenses align with agreements and are properly documented.
  • Engage in monthly salary monitoring and arrange timely payments.
  • Maintain accurate financial databases and produce evidence when requested.
  • Review payment requests and disbursements for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Assist the project manager in implementing internal control systems and financial procedures.

Skill and Educational Background:

  • Education: Master of Arts in Accounting and Finance.
  • Experience: One year of relevant work experience.
  • Language: Very good command of written and spoken English.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Word, MS Windows, MS Excel, and other accounting software.
  • Communication: Ability to compose professional communication.
  • Desired: Experience working on finance in projects/NGOs and a strong set of personal values including integrity, honesty, and a desire to serve.
