We are currently announcing a vacancy for a Sanitation and Hygiene Promoter.


Sanitation and Hygiene Promoter (Ethiopia)

JOB SUMMARY:

The Sanitation and Hygiene Promoter is responsible for leading a team of WASH Facilitators in household-level WASH promotion, and supporting WASH transformation in communities, schools, and Water Committees. This role ensures effective sanitation and hygiene promotion and sustained behavioral change, contributing to Lifewater International’s Vision of a Healthy Village (VHV) strategy.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Support the CHC in community-level water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) promotion, including:
    • Facilitate Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) triggering.
    • Conduct monthly community conversations using Lifewater’s guidebook in each target community.
    • Monitor monthly community-level progress.
    • With the CHC, identify struggling communities and provide additional support/capacity building.
    • Support organization of Open Defecation Free (ODF) certification.
  • Lead a team of WASH Facilitators to reach every household in their target communities with VHV programs, including vulnerable households:
    • Identify community leaders to serve as WASH Facilitators.
    • Support the CHC in training WASH Facilitators.
    • Encourage and coach WASH Facilitators through group meetings and household visits.
    • Identify struggling WASH Facilitators or households and provide additional support.
    • Meet at least once monthly with WASH Facilitators.
    • Gather household monitoring data and enter it into MWATER.
    • Register Healthy Homes.
  • Support the CHC in school-level WASH promotion, including:
    • Supporting trainings for teachers, students, and Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) or School Management Committees (SMC).
    • Providing regular support to WASH Clubs.
    • Monitoring and encouraging PTA/SMC contributions for water points and latrines.
  • Support Water Committees in target communities:
    • Support training and follow-up of Water Committees, including pre-requisites for hardware construction.
    • Monitor Water Committee progress during the intensive phase.
  • Review the appropriateness and effectiveness of sanitation and hygiene strategies and provide recommendations.
  • Participate in program evaluations, including conducting baseline and endline studies.
  • Personnel:
    • Submit weekly 15/5 reports and timesheet to supervisor.
    • Participate in weekly one-on-one supervision meetings and regular staff/Skype meetings.
    • Complete other duties as assigned.

KEY INDICATORS OF SUCCESS:

  • 100% of communities participate in SHO/SHP-led community conversations monthly.
  • 100% of vulnerable households are supported.
  • 100% of households monitored each month.
  • 90% of households become Healthy Homes by end of intensive phase.
  • 90% of water committees are functional/effective.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Education: University degree in environmental health, public/community health, development studies, community psychology, or other related field.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum two (2) years and above of experience in development work, preferably in a non-governmental organization setting.
    • At least two (2) years of field experience in the health or water and sanitation sector has advantages.
    • Previous experience coordinating and leading community development teams of field staff.
    • Previous experience and training in WASH programs.
  • Skills: Strong ICT skills, especially Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
