About Operation Smile:
Operation Smile is an international non-profit organization that provides free surgeries for people born with cleft conditions. The organization has been operating in Ethiopia since 2005 and is expanding its program to Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. The following are non-employment, stipend-based internship positions.
1. Intern for Coordinating Cleft Surgical Program
This position is based at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital.
Key Roles:
- Lead the renovation work for the new Cleft Centre at the hospital.
- Coordinate with hospital staff to identify gaps in infrastructure, supplies, and equipment for cleft and general plastic surgery services.
- Prepare a list of medical supplies to be procured by Operation Smile Ethiopia.
- Collaborate on awareness campaigns using local media outlets and by preparing IEC materials for the community.
- Register cleft cases, sequence them for surgery, and report patient data monthly.
- Conduct outreach activities to mobilize the community for surgical services.
- Execute other activities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education: BA in Medicine (Medical Doctor) from a recognized university.
- Experience: Zero years of experience.
- Skills: Excellent communication skills (writing and speaking) in English, Amharic, and Sidamigna or other local languages. Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office.
- Personal Attributes: Motivated, coachable, a team player, and willing to work with flexibility.
2. Accountant Intern
This position assists the finance team in the Addis Ababa head office and partner hospitals.
Key Roles:
- Assist the finance team with routine finance-related activities.
- In partner hospitals without a finance person, assist with patient-related payments for transportation, meals, and accommodation.
- Prepare documents and facilitate timely payments for training and workshops.
- Assist in tracking financial transactions and collecting expense documents from program teams.
- Scan and organize financial documents for weekly reports.
- Travel to banks, tax offices (ERCA), and other government offices to handle financial matters and collect documents.
- Enter monthly purchase, income tax, pension, and withholding data into government platforms.
- Execute other activities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education: BA in Accounting from a recognized university.
- Experience: Zero years of experience.
- Skills: Excellent communication skills (writing and speaking) in English and Amharic. Basic knowledge of accounting principles and computer skills in Microsoft Office and financial tools.
- Personal Attributes: Motivated, coachable, a team player, and willing to work with flexibility.
