πŸ“Œ Position 1: WASH Officer (Engineer)

πŸ“ Duty Station:

  • Benishangul Gumuz Region – Guba Woreda (Field-based)

🧾 Position Summary

The WASH Officer is a field-level position responsible for implementing emergency WASH interventions in affected communities. The role involves extensive fieldwork (approximately 80%), conducting rapid and detailed assessments, designing water supply and sanitation solutions, mobilizing communities, and ensuring quality implementation in line with WASH Cluster guidelines and SPHERE standards.

The position aims to ensure effective delivery of WASH project activities, strong community participation, and close coordination with local stakeholders to maximize impact.


πŸ” Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct rapid, detailed, and feasibility WASH assessments using ZOA tools
  • Identify priority WASH needs including water supply, sanitation, hygiene, and WASH NFIs
  • Design and supervise construction/rehabilitation of water schemes (springs, hand pumps, boreholes, pipelines)
  • Prepare implementation plans, work schedules, and monthly reports
  • Organize hygiene promotion campaigns (WASHEM, CLTSH, BCC/IEC, sanitation marketing, MHM)
  • Supervise WASH NFI and MHM kit targeting, registration, and distribution
  • Support formation and capacity building of water committees
  • Monitor operation and maintenance of water schemes
  • Coordinate with Woreda/Zonal Health and Women Affairs Offices
  • Support baseline, midline, and endline surveys with MEAL team
  • Supervise staff performance and provide technical guidance
  • Participate in WASH cluster coordination meetings
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

πŸŽ“ Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or above in:
    • Environmental Health
    • Public Health
    • Health Education
    • or related fields

🧠 Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience for Degree holders in WASH project implementation (especially sanitation and hygiene promotion)
  • Experience in emergency and development NGO projects preferred
  • Strong knowledge of hygiene approaches (WASHEM, CLTSH, BCC/IEC, Sanitation Marketing)

πŸ›  Skills & Competencies:

  • Good command of spoken and written English and Amharic (local language is an advantage)
  • Strong project management, teamwork, and data analysis skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience with Epi-Info and SPSS is an asset
  • Ability to work independently and in hard-to-reach areas under high workload

Under the direct supervision of the WASH Officer, the WASH Assistant supports the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of WASH activities in emergency-affected communities, with a focus on sanitation and hygiene promotion.

  • Support implementation and monitoring of WASH activities at field level
  • Assist in rapid, detailed, and feasibility assessments
  • Support sanitation and hygiene promotion activities
  • Collect sanitation coverage and beneficiary data
  • Assist in preparation of work plans and reports
  • Support supervision of construction and rehabilitation of WASH facilities
  • Assist in training and capacity building of water committees
  • Conduct water quality testing, disinfection, and sanitary surveys
  • Support coordination with local partners and authorities
  • Supervise contracted activities when assigned
