
Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is a civil society organization established to increase the role of lawyers in protecting human rights in Ethiopia. LHR is currently implementing a project titled “Improving access to justice in criminal justice process through legal aid services and capacity building activities” in Adama, Shashemene, and Addis Ababa.
1. Project Officer
Location: Addis Ababa (with travel to Shashemene and Adama)
Employment Type: Six months (with possibility of extension)
Reports to: Program Director
Job Summary: The Project Officer coordinates and manages the day-to-day implementation of project activities. This includes overseeing planning, reporting, and supervising legal aid providers to ensure alignment with LHR’s strategic priorities and donor requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and implement project activities at prison centers in Shashemene, Adama, and the Addis Ababa Coordination Center.
- Monitor project budgets, tracking payments, and ensuring financial compliance.
- Organize workshops, trainings, and meetings; prepare terms of reference and concept papers.
- Supervise and evaluate the work of project staff and legal aid providers.
- Prepare and present timely narrative and financial reports to donor organizations.
- Ensure the integration of national and international human rights principles in all activities.
Qualifications:
- Education: Minimum LLB (Bachelor of Laws). A Master’s degree in Law, Human Rights, or Project Management is a plus.
- Experience: 3–5 years in project management, with at least 2 years specifically in Human Rights.
- Skills: Proficiency in MS Office, strong analytical skills, and knowledge of donor procedures.
- Languages: Fluency in Afan Oromo, Amharic, and English is highly desirable.

2. Assistant Lawyer
Location: Addis Ababa
Employment Type: Six months (with possibility of extension)
Required Number: One
Job Summary: The Assistant Lawyer supports the principal lawyer in providing free legal aid services to detainees in prison centers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the principal lawyer in rendering legal counsel and preparing pleadings/briefs.
- Manage documentation and clerical activities related to legal cases.
- Discharge duties in accordance with the ethical standards of the legal profession.
- Maintain clear records of all legal aid sessions and outcomes.
Qualifications:
- Education: University degree in Law (LLB).
- Experience: 0 years (Fresh Graduate).
- Knowledge: Sufficient understanding of the Ethiopian criminal justice system, procedural laws, and international human rights frameworks.
- Languages: Mandatory fluency in English and Amharic. Excellent documentation and communication skills.
