Key Responsibilities
1. Driving & Transportation Services
- Safely transport TSFP nutrition commodities, medical supplies, humanitarian staff, and international visitors to project sites, remote health facilities, warehouses, and community distribution points.
- Strictly adhere to approved organizational movement plans, strict route protocols, and field security guidelines.
2. Vehicle Maintenance & Mechanical Support
- Conduct rigorous daily preventative maintenance checks (monitoring fluid levels, braking systems, tire pressure, electrical wiring, and battery health).
- Perform on-site mechanical troubleshooting and basic field repairs to keep project vehicles roadworthy.
- Diagnose and report complex mechanical faults promptly to technical fleet supervisors to coordinate specialized garage support.
3. Fleet Administration & Compliance
- Maintain meticulous, audit-compliant vehicle logbooks, tracking odometer mileage, fuel efficiency metrics, and scheduled service intervals.
- Ensure all statutory vehicle documentation (insurance covers, renewal licenses, and road inspection certificates) remains valid and accessible.
- Ensure cargo loads are balanced, distributed, and tied down securely to prevent loss or damage across rough terrain.
4. Operational Support
- Actively assist logistics personnel during the loading and unloading of nutritional cargo.
- Maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate emergency distributions, weekend assignments, and extended travel to deep rural locations.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
Education & Licenses:
- Completion of Grade 12 (or 10+2 secondary curriculum) OR a TVET Diploma in a technical field.
- Mandatory Requirement: Must possess a valid 3rd Grade (or equivalent appropriate class) Driving License.
Technical Training & Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience operating as a Driver Mechanic. Prior employment within an international NGO or humanitarian field program is highly preferred.
- Proven track record navigating heavy project vehicles through remote, rural, off-road, or difficult geographic terrain.
- Formal vocational certification or structured training in Auto Mechanics is heavily weighted as a competitive advantage.
Core Competencies & Skills:
- Practical capability in automotive electrical systems, engine troubleshooting, and emergency field repairs.
- Solid mastery of defensive driving techniques, national traffic regulations, and remote road safety.
- Strong individual integrity, proactive time-management, and high physical fitness to support manual loading activities.
Language & Context:
- Good foundational command of spoken and written English (capable of independent logbook reporting and manual reading).
- Strong familiarity with the local routes, security context, and operating environments within the Afar Region. Fluency in local languages is highly desirable.
