External Vacancy Announcement: Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC)

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is an independent national human rights institution with a mandate to promote and protect human rights in Ethiopia. The Commission is currently seeking highly qualified and dedicated professionals for the following positions.


1. Senior Legal Expert (Law and Policy)

Purpose of the Job: Review and analyze documentation generated by the Commission’s various functions to ensure high quality and standardization. You will contribute to developing standard tools, templates, and policies to guide the Commission’s outputs.

  • Main Duties:
    • Research legal and human rights trends to draft internal policies and procedures.
    • Provide feedback to improve investigation reports, monitoring reports, and training manuals.
    • Standardize documentation outputs across different directorates.
    • Guide the consistent application of working policies and initiatives.
  • Qualifications & Experience:
    • Education: MA in Human Rights Law, LLM, or International Law.
    • Experience: Minimum 6 years of experience in writing, editing, or producing human rights-related outputs.
    • Skills: Strong command of Amharic and English; proficiency in computer applications.

2. Human Rights Officer, Women’s Rights

Purpose of the Job: Conduct day-to-day monitoring and investigation activities to promote and protect women’s rights across different sectors and levels.

  • Main Duties:
    • Conduct monitoring of institutions to assess compliance with international human rights standards.
    • Lead fact-finding missions and investigations into systemic human rights abuses against women.
    • Draft briefing notes, statements, and human rights reports with remedial recommendations.
    • Follow up on the implementation of recommendations from international and regional treaty bodies.
    • Assist in capacity-building and gender mainstreaming within EHRC programming.
  • Qualifications & Experience:
    • Education: LLM, MA, or LLB in Law, Human Rights Law, International Law, or Gender Studies.
    • Experience: 4 years for LLB holders OR 2 years for LLM/MA holders.
    • Skills: Knowledge of Amharic is required; knowledge of other local languages is an advantage.

3. Coordinator, Partnership (Program and Partnership)

Purpose of the Job: Coordinate engagements with external partners (CSOs, NGOs, etc.), leveraging their expertise and assets to create a collaborative environment for joint human rights projects.

  • Main Duties:
    • Develop and implement guidelines for partnership identification and selection.
    • Provide technical advice to ensure the Commission maintains strong communication with existing and new partners.
    • Collaborate with thematic functions to identify qualities in partners that align with EHRC’s guiding principles.
    • Ensure the Commission adheres to the core principles of partnership in all joint implementations.
