Established in 1936, Awash Wine Share Company is Ethiopia’s oldest winemaker and one of the country’s most iconic brands. Operating two production facilities in Addis Ababa and a dedicated vineyard in Merti Jeju (Upper Awash), the company blends over 80 years of beverage industry tradition with international technical expertise.

Awash Wine SC is currently seeking qualified professionals to fill several key positions within its Quality Assurance, Production, and Food Safety operations.

Open Positions & Specifications

1. Hygiene and Sanitation Expert

  • Job Purpose: Safeguard the cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation standards of the winery to guarantee the production of safe, high-quality wines that comply with regulatory guidelines and food safety cultures.
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Monitor and improve sanitation programs across production areas, cellars, packaging lines, warehouses, and labs.
    • Provide technical guidance to daily sanitation crews and ensure the correct dilution, storage, and handling of sanitation chemicals.
    • Evaluate cleaning effectiveness via visual inspections, environmental monitoring, and micro-data trends alongside lab teams.
    • Coordinate pest management activities and support the upkeep of GHP, GMP, and HACCP compliance.
    • Investigate hygiene non-conformities, address audit gaps, and lead employee personal hygiene awareness programs.
  • Education: BSc Degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or Sanitary Science.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of work experience, preferably within the food or beverage industry.
  • Core Competencies: Knowledge of ISO standards, proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), adaptability, and the ability to work under pressure.

2. Microbiologist

  • Job Purpose: Serve within the Quality Assurance team to aid in safe product delivery by executing microscopic analysis, media preparation, and structured sampling of water and finished wine lines.
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Ensure the day-to-day sustainability and implementation of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22000:2005 standards.
    • Execute sampling, swabbing, and micro-testing on incoming raw materials, intermediate blends, finished products, and utilities.
    • Perform data analysis and log tracking metrics systematically within the AWSC Microbial QA Dashboard.
    • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain lab test equipment while keeping precise calibration and worksheets intact.
    • Raise Out of Specification (OOS) or non-conformance reports, perform root cause analysis, and minimize test variations.
    • Comply with strict company Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies, wearing prescribed PPE at all times.
  • Education: BSc Degree in Applied Biology or Food Microbiology.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of professional work experience in microbiology analysis and related laboratory activities.
  • Core Competencies: Independent worker, strong verbal and written communication, MS Office mastery, and high adaptability.

3. Site Quality Control Head

  • Job Purpose: Provide real-time leadership to the on-site laboratory, managing in-process monitoring from harvest/crush to bottling without sacrificing the artistic integrity of the vintage.
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Lead, coach, and build a high-performing culture within the Quality Control team focused on accountability and safety.
    • Manage chemical, microbiological, and sensory laboratory operations to ensure testing matches approved regulatory criteria.
    • Coordinate closely with Production and Cellar teams to maintain wine specifications and handle process optimizations.
    • Keep the winery audit-ready for ISO 22000 and HACCP validations, proactively clearing non-conformities.
    • Formulate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, quality manuals, and business correspondence reports.
    • Communicate any process, format, or raw material changes down to the Quality Food Safety Team (QFST).
  • Education & Certifications: * MSc or BSc degree in Food Science and Technology, Applied Chemistry, Applied Biology, Food Science and Post-Harvest Technology, Food Process Engineering, or Food Science and Nutrition.
    • Mandatory Requirement: Formal certification in ISO 22000 FSMS and ISO 9001 QMS.
  • Experience: Minimum of 6 years of experience for MSc holders OR 8 years of experience for BSc holders, preferably within beverage or food technology settings.
  • Core Competencies: Advanced data interpretation and problem definition skills, strong mentoring/teaching background, high integrity, and deep alignment with health and safety protocols.
